How to Burn a Candle Safely

You've just purchased a stunning boutique candle from the ASH&STONE Candle Collection. Your candle is NZ made, hand-poured and created with love. As your candle has a naked flame, we've provided guidelines for usage and safety. Please have a read through before use.

Before lighting

  • Trim the candle wick to 6mm in length
  • You can use a wick trimmer, nail clippers, or scissors to do this. Long or crooked wicks can cause uneven burning, dripping or flaring
  • Keep the wax pool clear of wick trimmings, matches and debris at all times
  • Place your candle jar on a heat resistant stable surface before lighting.

While burning

  • Burn your candle in a well-ventilated room
  • Never leave candle unattended
  • Never burn a candle on or near anything that can catch fire. Keep burning candles away from anything flammable
  • Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets, and positioned where they can’t be accidentally knocked over
  • If you're burning more than one candle, ensure they're at least 10cm apart. This ensures they don’t melt one another or create a burn draft
  • Never touch or move a candle while it is burning or while the wax is liquefied.

Burning technique and safety

  • As our candles are made from soy, burning for an hour will ensure the wax pool reaches out to the edge of the candle jar. This will minimise the chance of wax 'tunnelling'
  • Burn your candle for no more than three hours at a time
  • Allow to cool for up to two hours after use
  • Discard your candle when the wax level is at 1cm or less. We do not recommend using your candle with wax at this level
  • Extinguish your candle if the flame becomes too high or flickers repeatedly
  • Let the candle cool for two hours, trim the wick, and check for unwanted drafts before re-lighting
  • Never use a candle as a night light or if you may fall asleep.

Extinguishing your candle

  • To extinguish, use a candle snuffer or blow out very gently
  • Never use water or a candle dust cover to extinguish
  • Make sure the candle is completely out and the wick ember is no longer glowing before leaving the room
  • Don’t touch or move the candle until it has completely cooled.
