Large polished ammonite fossil with stand 2.55kg
A stunning polished piece with red crystalised pieces that shine when in the light.
Ammonites were shelled cephalopods that died out about 66-million years ago. The chambered shell that is visible here was used for buoyancy.
Ammonites were born with tiny shells and, as they grew, they built new chambers and would move their entire body into a new chamber, sealing off their old and now too-small living quarters with walls known as septa.
In this particular specimen, crystal formations have developed in those cavities making it a very special example.
