Large ammonite fossil
This is an exceptional piece. The crystal formations growing within the chambers of this fossil are delicate and give a softness to its formation. The result is a piece of contrasts; a distinctive sculptural collector's item to showcase within your home.
Ammonites were shelled cephalopods that died out about 66-million years ago. The chambered shell that is visible here was used for buoyancy.
Ammonites were born with tiny shells and, as they grew, they built new chambers and would move their entire body into a new chamber, sealing off their old and now too-small living quarters with walls known as septa.
In this particular specimen, crystal formations have developed in those cavities making it a very special example.
